So I'm usually not one to drop one project in favor of another, and I really wanted to start the second sardine sock right away, but I got some fabulous new yarn in and I wanted to drop everything and begin something new.
I knew I needed to make something for the hamster. Mum had sent me some "baby yarn"-- white, pink and pastel blue-- but it really wasn't the kind of thing that this particular baby (and his mom) would like. Bri is more of the rugged earthy type, a little hippie-ish, and I was not about to make her, or her baby, something like this. He needs something more... more natural, more earthy, more boyish, and still be appropriate for a neonate. I found this blog archive of the history and replacement of a beloved snuggly blanket, and I knew the red and blue blanket was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to make. I found some yarn that wasn't all that expensive and, for a bonus, it's from a company that is comprised of local artisans in Chile (which is right up Bri's alley).
So anyway, here are the assembled materials...
...my notes and scribbles...
...and the first 3 inches of the solid-color side of the blanket:
I decided to make a mostly blue blanket as opposed to mostly red, because I liked how the blue had more of a color variation to it, and I love how hand-painted yarns splotch and pool.
The finished blanket will be on the small side, only because my estimation skills aren't all that great, but it should end up being roughly 16 X 28, maybe a little bigger. I've always thought that homemade knitted baby blankets are not meant to be functional per se-- after the baby is bigger than a loaf of bread it tends to kick off its covers anyway-- but rather it's supposed to be just a scrap of fabric that is a tangible symbolization of Great Love:
